Why everyone is wearing a Pink Floyd Prism Tee

Sam S.  Jan 30th 2024

I get it, it’s iconic, and instantly recognisable the bright, distinct Prism of light flooding through the triangle into a bright rainbow of light that adorns the cover of Dark Side of the Moon, probably Pink Floyd‘s seminal work. Now is this why I am seeing more and more people in vintage-esque Pink Floyd tees or is it something else?

So shock & horror, sometimes people wear them even if they haven’t listened to Pink Floyd’s music or even know who they are. It might seem a bit strange, but there are some good reasons behind it – and is that ok? Quick answer – Yes it is!

The Pink Floyd Brand

First, Pink Floyd’s prism is super iconic. It’s a famous music symbol and for those in the know, it’s instantly recognisable. Like Nike has a swoosh (and doesn’t need to write the word Nike) or the Apple logo, people just know. From a music perspective, the equivalent would be the Rolling Stones tongue logo or the Nirvana smiley. So, for those people that have never heard Pink Floyd, they wear these shirts because they recognize the cool. It’s a way to show that they know about this famous rock band, even if they haven’t heard their songs. Pink Floyd is a legendary band, and some folks want to be a part of that legend.  It’s a bit like being part of an exclusive club, just for the sake of it. I’m okay with that, because it’s a conversation starter, especially for the youngsters, who really need to hear Dark Side of the Moon! It’s an education.

Those Hipsters

Second, wearing the prism shirt stands for something in today’s society. It’s kinda alternative, kinda hipster, very different – hey, guess what, before you judge, that’s exactly exactly who Pink Floyd were in the 70s. The eras change, but people and life don’t change as much as we think. Pink Floyd were the ultimate rebel’s of the time – fighting against “the man” – while battling their demons through drugs, music and booze. Sounds familiar?

Third and also totally acceptable, it’s also possible that some people wear these shirts because they think they look cool. The colors and design of the Pink Floyd prism are eye-catching, and it’s a fashionable choice. And that’s fine too.

New Rock Fans

Finally, some of these youngsters might wear these shirts because they have actually started listening to Pink Floyd. They are new fans and Pink Floyd’s DSOTM prism represents their genre-changing work. It’s a nod to the epic rockers of the old days to pick a vintage-esque Pink Floyd prism tee.

And So what?

In the end, whether you’ve listened to Pink Floyd’s music or not, wearing their prism on your t-shirt can be a way to show your style, your curiosity, or just your appreciation for a legendary band. So, next time you see someone in a Pink Floyd shirt, you’ll know there’s more to it than meets the eye – but rather it’s a conversation starter. Because of how important the DSOTM album is to the development of Psychedelic rock as a whole, I don’t care WHY people choose to wear that shirt – I’m just happy it has a long-lasting legacy, it deserves it.

Keep Rockin

Sam
