Formerly known as Death Cult, they settled on the less controversial name The Cult when starting their first tour 40 years ago in 1983 from Bradford in northern England. They broke into the mainstream in the United States in the late 1980s establishing themselves as a hard rock band with singles such as “Love Removal Machine”. Since its initial formation, The Cult have had various line-ups, break-ups and reunions; the longest-serving members are founder Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy, who are also the band’s two main songwriters.
