What’s with all the Horror? The fall TV schedules are looking scary. Whether you watch good ol cable television or a streamer – it’s Horror Season!
If you like Horror Punk there is a good chance you love The Misfits. The band made use of horror film and science fiction themes through makeup, clothing, artwork, and lyrics drawn from classic horror B movies from the 1950s. Musically The Misfits are often recognized as originators of the horror punk and psychobilly subgenres and have drawn from punk rock, heavy metal, and 1950s rock ‘n roll and rockabilly to create their style, unique to say the least. They are considered icons in punk music and culture, with their friendly mascot the Fiend Skull. Call him what you will, the fiendish ghoul “Crimson ghost” has been the face of The Misfits for decades. For fans of the fiend and the horror punk he represents, these faded Misfits T-Shirts will strike fear into the hearts of mere mortals.
When you talk about the Misfits lineup, you’re talking about the raw energy that gave birth to punk rock’s darker side. Glenn Danzig, the frontman with that devilish growl and commanding presence, was the driving force behind the band’s hauntingly catchy, yet aggressive sound. You couldn’t talk about the Misfits without mentioning the legendary Jerry Only on bass, laying down those thick, rumbling lines that gave their songs that edge. The guitar work from Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein was pure chaos, delivering heavy riffs that felt like a wall of sound crashing into you. And then there’s the drumming, with a rotating cast of players, but always keeping that fast, pounding rhythm that made every Misfits track feel like a call to arms. Together, this lineup became one of the most iconic in punk rock history, blending horror, rebellion, and unforgettable anthems like “Last Caress” and “Die, Die My Darling.” The Misfits weren’t just a band; they were a movement, and their original lineup left a mark that can still be felt today.
The Misfits’ music is a raw, punch-you-in-the-face blend of punk rock and horror, and it doesn’t give a damn about anything but chaos. Their sound is all about high-energy riffs, pounding drums, and that unmistakable, raspy growl of Glenn Danzig that makes you feel like you’re part of something dark and rebellious. With songs like “Astro Zombies” and “Skulls,” they created a whole new genre that mixed horror movie themes with punk attitude, making every track feel like a twisted anthem for outsiders. The Misfits’ music is fast, furious, and unapologetically in-your-face, with a style and energy that’s been influencing bands for decades. It’s not just music—it’s a movement, a soundtrack to the misfits and rebels of every generation. When you play a Misfits song, you’re tapping into that primal, raw energy that just doesn’t stop.
