The United States Congress has honored her as “the first lady of civil rights” and “the mother of the freedom movement”, Rosa Parks is a VERY important figure in American history. On December 1, 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parks rejected the bus driver’s order to vacate the “colored” section of the bus in favor of a White passenger. Her subsequent arrest was a pivotal moment in the the civil rights movement and pivotal in the Montgomery bus boycott that followed. Rosa Parks became an international icon of resistance to racial segregation, and organized and collaborated with civil rights leaders, including Edgar Nixon and Martin Luther King Jr. as well as being a key member of the NAACP.
