“SAW: The Cutting Edge of Powerful Storytelling and New Age Entertainment”Well, anyone who tries telling me that SAW doesn’t represent storytelling at its finest, is someone asking for an argument that’s more twisted than Jigsaw’s traps. I’ve heard folks say that today’s movie-goers prefer cerebral mind-teasers over so-called ‘torture porn’, but I can tell you straight – nothing gets the adrenaline pumping like hearing those infamous words, I want to play a game. Whether you like it or not, SAW has been a pioneer in the genre, with bad-ass storytelling that keeps you on the edge, just like Diary of a Wimpy Kid doesn’t…seriously. And wearing my favorite ‘tees’ while I’m at it, making sure I don’t get a single popcorn stain on it, while I’m engrossed in the plot.

Here’s where I got to remind everyone that things were different back in ’04. We’ve gotten so used to Netflix’s ‘horror’ flicks now, that we’ve forgotten what true edgy cinema is like. Back in the day, a hoodie-clad me went to see every SAW movie at midnight premieres and was met with an atmosphere of pure excitement and dread. I remember the collective gasps in the theater, the chilling score creeping into your soul, and the anticipation of watching Jigsaw’s games unfold on the big screen. Wearing my favorite ‘hood’ was like a badge. If you weren’t shaking at the end, you weren’t paying attention.

It’s a disgrace that we’ve devolved into an age of passable storytelling. The mumble-gore trash they churn out today couldn’t hold a candle to SAW. That franchise was ground-breaking, pushing boundaries every sequel dared not to. It utilized the medium to tell powerful stories about survival, redemption, and the human will. At the end of the day, I can put on my favorite ‘tees’ and ‘hood’, pop in a SAW DVD, and be just as engaged, horrified, and entertained as I was the very first time. Now that’s powerful storytelling.
